Dihydroberberine
Dihydroberberine is a derived form of berberine, a natural plant compound found in barberry and goldenseal, among others. Interest in this form is growing because of one important difference: dihydroberberine is absorbed more easily by the body than regular berberine. Part of the berberine you take is converted by gut bacteria into dihydroberberine, which passes the intestinal wall more easily. Dihydroberberine skips that first conversion step, so the body can make more berberine available at a lower dose.
Purovitalis chooses dihydroberberine because a lower amount can lead to higher berberine concentrations, which is also easier on the stomach.
Research
Berberine and dihydroberberine are widely studied in relation to glucose metabolism and metabolism in general. Berberine Balance uses dihydroberberine, a modified form of berberine, and combines it with chromium. It is chromium that provides the concretely substantiated function of the formula.
In a small human study, a lower amount of dihydroberberine led to higher levels of berberine in the blood than a larger amount of regular berberine. The study did not show a difference in blood glucose. This is why the form is of interest within research into berberine and how much of it the body can use.
