GlyNAC and liver health – What glycine + NAC does to the liver

Abstract illustration of a healthy liver concept in red tones.

The liver is the body’s own “laboratory,” with more than 500 known functions.
It breaks down waste products, regulates energy, produces essential proteins, and protects against toxins. When the liver isn’t working properly, the entire body is affected — from metabolism to immunity. Poor liver function is linked to a shorter lifespan, while a healthy liver supports longer and healthier living.

In this blog we look at how glycine, NAC, and GlyNAC — a combination supplement of these two nutrients — support liver health and longevity.

Glycine and liver health

Glycine is one of the simplest amino acids, but its functions are far from simple. Beyond the liver, glycine also plays a role in collagen formation, nervous system signaling, and supporting healthy sleep.

Human studies show glycine may protect the liver from damage caused by alcohol, medications, and fat accumulation.

In 2021, a randomized clinical trial found that glycine supplementation improved markers of liver function in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Research from 2020 also showed that low blood glycine levels are strongly linked to fatty liver disease, and glycine-based therapies may help reduce liver fat and inflammation.

What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver happens when too much fat builds up inside the liver. This usually occurs if the liver gets more fat from food or from body fat than it can handle. The extra fat stays in the liver cells, which is called steatosis. Fatty liver is often linked to being overweight, having type 2 diabetes, or metabolic issues. If it continues for years, the liver can become inflamed and in severe cases develop scarring (cirrhosis).

NAC and liver health

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is well-known as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants. Glutathione plays a central role in protecting liver cells from oxidative stress and toxins.

In 2022, a clinical trial reported that NAC supplementation lowered elevated liver enzymes in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A 2023 meta-analysis further supported this, showing that NAC improved liver function markers across randomized trials.

NAC has also been tested in people with alcohol use disorder, many of whom had alcohol-related liver problems. In a 2023 randomized trial, daily NAC supplementation was safe and feasible over 28 days.

Possible side effects and dosage

Across all the studies included in this blog — both those investigating glycine, NAC, and GlyNAC — supplementation was shown to be safe, with no serious adverse effects reported. Dosages varied widely, often ranging from hundreds of milligrams to several grams per day. In 2022, two clinical trials on GlyNAC found that daily supplementation improved glutathione levels and markers of oxidative stress without major adverse effects. This highlights that results are promising, but more standardized trials are needed. For now, it’s best to follow recommended supplement guidelines rather than experimental high doses.

Pure GlyNAC for liver health

At Purovitalis, our GlyNAC supplement is developed with premium-grade glycine and NAC, formulated with liposomal technology to ensure high absorption and purity. This guarantees that what you take is both safe and effective — designed to support your liver and your long-term healthspan.

A healthy liver is essential for energy, metabolism, and longevity. Research from recent years shows that both glycine and NAC — individually and together as GlyNAC — may support liver health, reduce enzyme markers of damage, and strengthen the body’s natural antioxidant defenses.

But results are only as good as the product you choose. Many supplements on the market are poorly manufactured and can contain fillers or contaminants. For the liver — the body’s key detox organ — purity is not optional, it’s crucial.

If you want to support your liver with a supplement backed by science and manufactured to the highest standards, explore our Purovitalis GlyNAC supplement.

When it comes to GlyNAC, there’s much more to explore than just liver health. Research suggests it may also play a role in areas like energy, sleep, and even cognitive function. If you’re curious to learn more, check out these articles:
