
A recent 2025 human study compared liposomal NMN with regular non-liposomal NMN and placebo over a period of 4 weeks. The researchers wanted to see how the different forms affected NAD+ levels in the blood — a molecule involved in cellular energy production and mitochondrial activity, which naturally declines with age.
The result? Participants taking liposomal NMN showed the largest increase in NAD+.

What was the study about?
The study, published in Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports in February 2025, included 15 healthy men over the age of 40. Participants were divided into three groups:
- Placebo
- Non-liposomal NMN
- Liposomal NMN
Both NMN groups received 350 mg daily for 4 weeks. Researchers measured blood NAD+ levels before supplementation, after the first dose, after 4 weeks, and again 4 weeks after stopping supplementation.
The study was designed as a double-blind trial, meaning neither participants nor researchers knew which product each person received until the study ended.
Why does NAD+ matter?
NAD+ is involved in how cells produce energy. It plays a central role in mitochondrial function and is used in processes connected to metabolism, cellular repair and healthy aging.
According to the researchers, NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, which may contribute to reduced cellular function over time.
That is one reason NMN has received growing attention in longevity research. NMN acts as a precursor to NAD+, meaning the body can use it to help produce more NAD+.

The difference between liposomal and regular NMN
A key part of the study was the comparison between regular NMN and liposomal NMN.
According to the researchers, regular NMN may need to be converted into nicotinamide riboside (NR) before it can enter the cells. This means it goes through extra steps before the body can use it to produce NAD+.
Liposomal NMN is different. Here, NMN is packed inside tiny lipid-based particles called liposomes. These liposomes are designed to help carry NMN through the cell membrane more directly.

After 4 weeks, the liposomal NMN group showed significantly higher NAD+ levels compared to both placebo and non-liposomal NMN.

What happened after supplementation stopped?
Four weeks after participants stopped taking NMN, NAD+ levels declined again in both NMN groups.
This suggests that continued supplementation may be necessary to maintain elevated NAD+ levels over time.
Interestingly, the liposomal group still tended to maintain slightly higher NAD+ levels than the other groups after the washout period, although the difference was no longer statistically significant.
A small study — but an interesting one
The researchers themselves point out that this was a small exploratory study with only 15 participants and a relatively short duration. So larger and longer human studies are still needed before firm conclusions can be made.
Still, the findings add something valuable to the growing research around NMN and healthy aging. In this direct comparison between liposomal and non-liposomal NMN, the liposomal form led to significantly higher NAD+ levels after 4 weeks.
The study also highlights an important point: when it comes to NMN, the delivery method may matter just as much as the ingredient itself.
